An update on Our Actions in Response to Covid-19

At After School Matters, we are guided by a vision to create a better life for the many people. Now more than ever, we want to put our values into action to help co-workers, teens and customers adjust to the new realities of life. We know this hasn’t been easy, and there are many challenges we will face. Never less we will always come back to our main commitment—to act in the best interests of our co-workers, teens and the many people.

Ensuring safety and wellbeing

The health and safety of our teens, instructors, partners, staff, and supporters is of paramount importance to all of us at After School Matters. In coordination with Chicago Public Schools and using guidance from public health officials, After School Matters is instituting policies designed to minimize the spread of COVID-19 (coronavirus). As a result, all After School Matters programs have been paused through at least April 21.

We have committed to continue to pay our teens their stipends, knowing how important it is to continue to provide these economic resources to them, their families, and their communities. Seventy percent of our expenses go back into the communities we serve via stipends and instructor pay.

Caring for our community

While formal programs are currently on hold, our amazing instructors are still connecting with After School Matters teens to ensure the learning continues. Video chat check-ins and enrichment newsletters are now providing teens with resources to their content area, projects to try at home, as well as resources for food access and other necessities during this time. In addition to engaging with their teens remotely, our instructors are also creating fun videos, tips, and playlists on social media to put a smile on your face, share ways to stay active at home, or cook something simple with ingredients you already have in your kitchen.

Giving customers solutions for life at home

Keeping our online business operational not only enables us to care for our co-workers and our community, but it also allows us to continue to meet the needs of our customers who are discovering a new meaning to life at home. We see our customers looking to After School Matters for furnishing, one-of-a-kind artwork, gifts, clothing, and most importantly in supporting us as an organization and our talented teens, as they are spending more time at home. Our online shop will still be available to our valued customers as our store remains closed to the public.

For any questions or concerns in regards to your recent online orders feel free to contact us at Sales@afterschoolmatters.org

Securing the future

We need to protect the organization, so that we can continue protecting our co-workers, instructors and most importantly our teens. At After School Matters we strongly believe our teens are our future and it's important that we help do everything we can possible. As soon as the situation improves, we hope to gradually resume programs for teens, instructors, and staff.

We are continuing to evaluate the needs of our business today, while anticipating the future of our teens so we can make it through this crisis together – and reemerge stronger than before.
